Engage in interactive lectures, excursions, dialogues, and site visits with local business, community, and engineering leaders in Sydney.

Gain an understanding of central leadership theories and concepts, practice applying leadership knowledge and skills to various contexts, and examine cultural aspects pertaining to leadership.

Credit granted for either ENES 317 (Introduction to Leadership in Engineering, Science, and Technology) or LEAD 217 (Introduction to Leadership)- both fulfill the DSSP General Education requirement and meet several other academic program electives/requirements

Eligibility:
This course is open to undergraduates who have completed 45 credits prior to departure.
All majors are encouraged to enroll in this course.

Kerry Tripp in the University of Maryland’s (UMD) School of Public Health along with the UMD Office of International Affairs and Career Services are continuing to develop Virtual Global Internships (VGI). This program allows students to engage with international researchers and businesses, as well as UMD faculty and local business partners who work with international populations and complex global problems—while you work safely from home. We are excited about our new collaboration with the Institute of Psychology, University of Szeged, Hungary (USz) and share this VGI opportunity with its faculty and students.

Description:
Virtual Global Internships (VGIs) are an equitable and sustainable way to allow today’s college students to grow into the next generation’s leaders. This semester we are working to support UMD’s Office of Sustainability to foster a culture of environmental consciousness. VGIs eliminate the barriers, costs, and emissions that come with travel and commuting, while also cultivating productive and inclusive virtual working environments. Students are encouraged to leave small footprints as they develop their research, analysis, communication, and cultural competency skills with leading international partners and ideas.

This position may involve compensation. We are excited to offer this Hungarian Couples Summer Research Project Spanish Speaking Research Assistant virtual internship with a team of Hungarian scholars. Their international research explores "how African American and Latinx couples construct a sense of security in their homes and the emotional and environmental strategies they use to cope with stress." When the research begins in the summer 2022, subject couples will participate in one-to-one, qualitative, semi-structured interviews (the ‘Emotional Map of the Home Interview’) exploring their everyday experiences related to emotionally significant places in their homes. 

Responsibilities: 

Prior to starting the research, the researchers are now looking for research assistant(s) interns who will meet the translation needs to help:

a. answer emails in English/Spanish to provide potential study participants with a description of the study and to obtain intake information.

b. call participants in English/Spanish to provide confirm participant eligibility.

c. use the computer to archive Qualtrics data.

d. contact participants in English/Spanish by email/ phone to arrange interviews.

e. transcribe audio recordings of interviews (verbatim transcription in English/Spanish).

We are looking for two to three students to serve as research assistants, with a preference for native Spanish-speaking or upper-level students who are majoring in the language and who are interested in couples counseling. The preferred intern will have skills in Excel. Strong communication skills in English and Spanish and the ability to work independently in this virtual internship are a plus.

Students’ hourly commitments are flexible. Students can apply for academic credit through their departments but students who do not want course credits but are interested in a cross-cultural learning experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Interested in becoming a change maker and discovering how social entrepreneurship can bring lasting improvement to people’s lives?

We invite you to join the 2019 Maryland Social Entrepreneur Corps (MSEC), a unique study and internship program abroad for undergraduate and graduate students where you will spend your summer in a Latin American country observing, creating and implementing sustainable business solutions to poverty-related challenges.

SPRING: Prior to departure, you will participate in a spring course at UMD (meets Wednesday nights from March 27th through May 8th) that introduces you to the theory and practice of social entrepreneurship and its potential to transform communities while preparing you for your summer fieldwork.

SUMMER: You will then spend eight weeks immersed in your destination country while learning about social entrepreneurship through consulting with local businesses and implementing development projects with rural populations.

FALL: Upon returning to campus, you will complete a reflection course to apply the skills learned abroad to your future coursework, career and your own entrepreneurial ideas.

PSYC Major Shares Her Abroad Experience in Copenhagen!

Psychology senior Atousa Motameni studied abroad last year in Denmark, through the Maryland-in-Copenhagen program. While this is typically a semester-long program, Atousa loved her experience so much that she decided to stay for the whole year! We asked her to share her experience with us, and here is what she said. Keep in mind that applications for Maryland semester, short-term, and exchange programs for next winter, spring, and spring break are due on October 1st! Visit the UMD Education Abroad website for more information, and always remember to check with a PSYC advisor to make sure you have time to study abroad.

"I chose the Maryland-in-Copenhagen program at DIS initially because all I knew about Denmark was that they were consistently on the top of the list for 'the happiness country in the world' and I was curious what made the people so happy! Additionally, the class options for both my majors (Psychology and English) interested me and it was great to have those credits transfer so easily, which is what allowed me to stay the whole year without worrying too much about not meeting graduation requirements!

The unique thing about DIS is how much we traveled. For my Core Course, European Clinical Psychology, we went to Western Denmark just a couple of weeks after the semester started. This was

well timed because my main group of friends in Denmark was solidified during that trip and we became inseparable after one of the group dinners! During that week our class saw more of Denmark and visited different therapeutic sites around the country, including a Veterans center that pioneered PTSD research in Denmark, a youth prison using a very unique short-term intensive psychoanalysis, and a Snoezelhuset, which uses operational therapy principles for people with autism and dementia. There were also great cultural aspects of this trip where we went to a beautiful art museum and then bonded over Danish sweet dough that we heated up over the bonfire. It was amazing to see the Danish way of implementing therapy and psychology. I took a few other psychology courses while I was in Denmark, including "Psychology of Leadership," "Psychology of Endings," and "Psychology of Adolescence in Scandinavia." The Leadership class falls under the I/O psychology field and for it we met with CEOs, Ministry heads, and other executives to learn about their leadership style and how they motivate the people they lead. For the Endings class we explored the different aspects of endings people encounter ranging from loss of life, job or significant other to the ending of a conversation or class. The Adolescence class explored the life-stages for Danish and other Scandinavian youth would go through and we compared them to American adolescent experiences!

For the same European Clinical Psychology class, just a few weeks after the first trip we traveled to

Vienna, Austria to visit the birthplace of three important schools of Venetian psychology: Freudian, Individual (Adler) and Logo Therapy (Frankl). These legendary psychologists lived close to each other and their theories were developed simultaneously and also influenced by each other. We walked in their footsteps and visited current-day psychologists that are practicing within those ideologies. In Vienna, we also visited the Leopold Museum and the Belvedere where we chose a painting and we wrote a psychological analysis of in the scope of one of those ideologies. Since current affairs in Europe are still affected by the 'refugee crisis' we also went to one of the centers where the refugees are sent upon their arrival to Vienna and compared that visit to a harrowing and humbling trip to one of the concentration camps on the outskirts of Vienna. Each of these out of the classroom experiences related to the material we had been studying in class and were essential to us having the necessary knowledge to engage in those real-life settings. Our cultural visit in Vienna was going to the Opera Tosca at the famous opera house! Honestly, the whole year was like a dream! And the great thing about Maryland-in-Copenhagen is that it is well-structured to allow for those outside the classroom experiences, which truly make for an unforgettable life-changing semester, summer or year abroad!"

Guten tag! Over the summer, 32 UMD undergraduate students studied the history of mental health treatment from ancient times to the present day. Vienna was chosen due to its significance in psychology’s timeline at the turn-of-the-20th century through notable figures such as Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, Viktor Frankl, and Melanie Klein. Students also visited the nearby cities of Salzburg, Austria and Budapest, Hungary.

The 3-credit course, titled “Freud’s Footsteps: Psychotherapy Then and Now” (PSYC438F), took place over three week during June. The course was created and taught by Dr. Kevin McGann who was assisted by Ms. Lori Kader. The course was held in a historic international education center in downtown Vienna, and was supplemented by group field trips and guided tours of the city of Vienna, Freud’s apartment and therapy practice, and continental Europe’s first inpatient psychiatric hospital (Narrenturm, or “Fool’s Tower”). The group also met with psychology students and faculty from the University of Vienna. Students lived in shared apartments.

Are you looking for professional experience in the field of international education? Apply today to be a peer mentor in Education Abroad. In this position, you will work 8-12 hours a week assisting with outreach, presentations, and administrative tasks and working one-on-one with prospective study abroad students. If you are interested, please read the full position description(link is external) and email your completed peer mentor application(link is external) to Deborah Lake (dmlake@umd.edu(link sends e-mail)) by January 19th. Training will take place prior to the start of the semester.

Education Abroad is offering the EA Access Flight Access Voucher Program.  Please let BSOS know by January 20 [to give the College time to meet the January 25 EA deadline] if you would like to be nominated. Respond by completing the short survey here.

International airfare is a high-priced, out of pocket expense for students studying abroad - easily reaching up to $2,500.

Students cannot use financial aid or regular scholarships for the purchase of flights due to federal regulations and disbursement of funds.

PERUGIA, Italy — “There is no one right way to do things,” said UMD Psychology Major, Daniela Adler Mzhen, as she shared her thoughts on her most recent courses in Human Development and Psychology. Daniela is currently studying abroad in Perugia, Italy through the Maryland-in-Perugia program hosted at the Umbra Institute, an American study abroad program whose courses focus on introducing students to intercultural interpretations of international realities.

During her time at Umbra, Daniela has been enrolled in PYHD 430: Human Development in Culture, a course led by Professor Christian Tarchi. In this course, Tarchi teaches the ecology of human development, or the complex interaction of a constantly changing organism and its constantly evolving environment. He emphasizes the idea that even though individuals and groups of individuals differ from each other, some ideas, values, and behaviors may be universal and shared by all humans in all cultures, ultimately making us more alike than we may realize. “I want to do therapy at some point so being able to put myself in other people’s shoes to understand where they are coming from is very important,” explained Daniela as she discussed the importance of taking a multicultural approach to the study of Psychology. “You are not them”, she added before emphasizing that it is important to realize that people come from different places and therefore have different values that dictate their actions and reactions. To read more about Daniela's Maryland In Peruglia, Italy abroad experience click HERE
