Description:
The Zuckerman Institute seeks a talented individual who possesses expertise in neuroscience or a related field, and science communication or public engagement with science. Reporting to the Senior Content Development Specialist, the Public Programs Manager will assist in the management of public engagement programs including Breakout Science, a program of interdisciplinary events bridging the arts and science, in collaboration with community-based organizations. The Public Programs Manager will also assist with program evaluation, grant writing and fostering a community of scientists and staff engaging with public programs. The Public Programs Manager will also assist with other programs designed to bring science to public audiences.


Responsibilities:
Assists with the management and teaching of programs designed for teachers, K-12 students, and adults.
Assist with Public Programs Staff to develop community building efforts including creating opportunities for Zuckerman Institute scientists and staff to engage with the public programs.
Supports and co-leads new initiatives to help Zuckerman Institute scientists build skills including communicating science to scientific and public audiences and mentorship.
Assists with the creation of, coordinates, and maintains true community partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs) and critical anchor institutions; working in direct consultation with CBOs to develop programming that reaches new audiences and creates content that they own and value.
Conduct and manages program evaluation; coordinates with external evaluators in the development and execution of evaluative measures that are appropriate for each audience.
Mentors part-time science educators including trainees of the Zuckerman Institute, Columbia University undergraduates and high school interns.
Effectively promotes public programs to Columbia community and external audiences through social media and other modes of communication.
Assists with planning and execution of specific events such as open houses, public events and workshops.
Supports initiatives to infuse diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) into programs; collaborates with the other Public Programs staff to help ZI meet its DEIB goals.
Perform other operational duties in line with the long-term public engagement goals of the Institute.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree preferably in neuroscience or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
A minimum of three (3) years of part-time experience with education or public engagement.
Must have a minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience.
Evening and weekend availability required.

Preferred Qualifications:
An advanced degree in neuroscience with a familiarity with an academic research or not-for-profit environment is preferred.
Ability to design and refine programmatic content and work with scientists to communicate their work to public audiences.
Excellent project management and time management skills.
Experience with building and maintaining relationships with external parties (e.g., community-based organizations). Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Willingness and ability to stay informed about current advances in neuroscience and science communication trends.
Attention to detail, flexibility and ability to set priorities.
Ability to take initiative and work under minimal supervision, as well as respond to direction.
Enjoys working in a team environment.
Comfortable working with scientific and public audiences.
Energetic, creative and enthusiastic, and accustomed to public speaking in front of small groups.
Strong organizational skills and have a commitment to exceptional quality.
