THE HUMANITIES, HEALTH AND MEDICINE (HHM) MINOR engages students in an interdisciplinary curriculum that applies the methods, perspectives and insights of the arts, humanities and the social sciences to health and medical education. The minor uses questions and research methods from literary and cultural studies, arts, philosophy, communication, history and other disciplines to develop and nurture empathy, ethical understanding, social-cultural analysis, self-reflection and an appreciation of diversity and inclusion, which are essential for humane, effective medical care and sound health policy. The minor is intended for all students who have an interest in health and wellness.
Demonstrate the diverse historical, cultural, ethical and spiritual dimensions of health. Develop a critical, interdisciplinary, empathetic and holistic understanding of the issues and challenges faced by medical and health professionals. Analyze and evaluate complex texts related to the social and cultural aspects of medicine. Explore the “real world” application, research and communication practices in the health and medical fields.
