Part-time Grad Student Research Position Focused on Autism Inclusion in STEM!

Description:
This project is supervised by Dr. Jen Wessel in Psychology and several collaborators connected to the
University of Maryland Autism Research Consortium. The PAIR project aims to increase the representation of autistic individuals in scientific research, specifically focused on increasing the inclusion of autistic undergraduates in university research labs. This position involves collecting data via focus groups and interviews from autistic students as well as faculty and research staff and using that data to develop and create an autism-affirming training for faculty members and research staff in research labs.

The position will be paid part-time (6 hours / week in Summer and Fall 2023; 10 hours/ week in Spring and Summer 2024). This is an excellent opportunity to gain research experience in preparation for and academic and/or research career.

Responsibilities: 
-Attend regular project-related meetings
-Assist in developing a training needs assessment (i.e., questions/ prompts for focus groups and interviews)
-Assist in recruiting participants for training needs assessment
-Coordinate the scheduling of focus groups and interviews with both faculty and research staff, as well as autistic students; maintain the schedule for the research team
-Email participants to schedule and remind about focus groups, interviews
-Train and supervise undergraduate research assistants to assist in tasks (e.g., transcribing interview and focus group recordings)
-Assist in data analysis
-Lead on developing a training program that could be delivered in person or synchronously online

Qualifications:
 -Must be an enrolled UMD GRADUATE Student by start date
-Ability to work for 6-10 hours per week for the full year
-Willingness to learn and take direction as part of a team
-Ability to reliably complete tasks thoroughly and on time
-Solid organizational and planning skills
-Experience creating visually appealing and user-friendly materials (e.g., past experiences with creating slides, websites, training materials, poster presentations, etc.)
-Interest in improving inclusion in higher education, and specifically for autistic individuals
-Basic proficiency in using Excel/Sheets and Zoom/ web conferencing tools
