Research experiences are a fantastic way to get involved in the field of psychology, especially at the undergraduate level. Participating in these hands-on experiences is a superb way to learn more about working in the field; it is also a great way to connect with professionals. Finding these opportunities can be challenging. One great option is to reach out to faculty members in your program to see if there are volunteer or for-credit research opportunities on campus or in your local community. There are also several research opportunities that invite broad applications. Below is a list of research programs that have open applications now! Also, check out our list of internships for great opportunities to learn more skills and gain valuable workplace experience.

Internship Opportunities
Internships are a key component of garnering experience in the psychology field. Whether it’s building connections with professionals or honing in on your areas of interest, internships are an excellent way to learn more about the field using a hands-on approach. One of the most challenging aspects of finding an internship in psychology is that they are not always widely advertised. Some students are able to create internships by reaching out to organizations of interest in their local communities and asking if they are open to that possibility. Some psychology programs, colleges, and universities may have arrangements with local organizations to offer internships that are limited to their student population. We encourage students to talk to their faculty advisors and meet with career services professionals at their school to learn more about their options. Additionally, below we share a list of some advertised internship opportunities for both undergraduate and high school students. Also, check out our list of research opportunities for undergraduates, which are another great way to gain experience and knowledge about the field!

Internships at APA
Summer Internship Program
Students selected for summer internships at APA will have the opportunity to take part in additional programming and activities throughout the summer. This allows interns to go more in-depth with topics relevant to young professionals in psychology, such as applying to graduate school, networking, research, resume and cover letter writing, and federal advocacy. Interns will have weekly opportunities to interact with other interns and learn more about Washington, D.C. and APA, through various activities and outings.
