IRTA NIMH Post-Bac RA Opportunity!

The Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of

Mental Health (NIMH), Office of the Clinical Director, in Bethesda, Maryland, seeks a qualified individualto fill an IRTA (Intramural Research Training Award) position, with employment starting in June 2023. Our office has two primary functions: 1) serve as the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service for the clinical research hospital at NIH (Clinical Center) and 2) conduct research as part of the Intramural Research Program at NIMH on a variety of topics such as suicide screening in the medical setting, distress screening in chronically ill children, and other mental health/public health issues. The primary duties for this position will involve working with a Senior Associate Scientist / clinical
psychologist, Lisa M. Horowitz, PhD, MPH, who specializes in suicide prevention research, instrument
development and suicide risk screening in medical settings (emergency department, primary care clinic,
etc.). The position includes close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers.

The candidate will be involved in a wide array of research activities, including but not limited to: weekly research meetings, maintaining ongoing collaborations with extramural partners from around the country, database entry, analysis, and management, and attending NIH-wide Grand Rounds, seminars, etc. presented by leading researchers in various fields of study. We also encourage our IRTAs to develop independent research projects, which can result in presentations at academic conferences and/or published manuscripts. In addition, this position allows the IRTA to gain unique clinical experience by shadowing our senior attendings on psychiatric consultations at the NIH Clinical Center.

This full-time, 2-year, position requires a bachelor’s degree and U.S. citizenship or permanent resident
status (resident alien). Competitive applicants should be extremely organized, highly motivated, and able to work both independently and with others. Ideal candidates are those considering applying to
psychology PhD programs following IRTA fellowship. A two-year commitment is required.
