Position 1 Description: The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (DWFI) is searching for an intern to help analyze satellite imagery and evapotranspiration data in support of the Decision Support System team. Experience with agricultural meteorology, GIS and/or image processing software is desirable. The intern is expected to work at DWFI at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, interfacing with Dr. Christopher Neale and the Nebraska Team, including participating in field activities.

Position 2 Description: Assist with data collection (soil samples, georeferenced crop scouting, tissue sampling, aerial imagery acquisition) for existing on-farm research studies (anticipate approximately 120 studies, of which nearing 50 will be related to nitrogen management). Film and produce short video updates of research studies and results for web and social media use. Assist in development of articles for CropWatch and the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network newsletter to share research summaries and updates for farmer and agronomist audiences. Conduct interviews with participating farmers to use in web and social media. Co-present at field days and precision ag crop management clinics (assuming we can resume normal activities). Location: University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign)
Position Description: The intern will assist the modeling team at UIUC with developing and using computational models to study food and bioenergy crop development as they relate to crop production risk analyses and/or water use. Prior programming experience is preferred.

Location: University of Maryland (College Park)- 4 available positions
Position 1 Description: The student interns will work with members of Dr. Liang’s lab at UMD/ESSIC to develop modules that use observations and climate model output to predict environmental and agricultural outcomes such as water quality and availability, crop growth and yield, and agricultural productivity and sustainability. Additionally, interns will assist DAWN’s project management team in organizing project-wide workshops and compiling reporting documents. Candidates should have some coding experience and an interest in applying machine learning techniques to analyze large data sets.

Position 2 Description: The DAWN’s decision support system (DSS) team is searching for an intern to help with a variety of data analyses tasks that include GIS, data processing, and/or visualization using available software and analyses tools (e.g. R, ArcGIS, MATLAB). The DSS under development within DAWN aims to compile and analyze agricultural management data reported and observed across numerous sites in the US Midwest, and use that data to diagnose and verify process-based agroecosystem models (such as the soil and water assessment tool-SWAT). We also will integrate remote sensing land use, climate forcing, and vegetation data into SWAT to perform regional assessment of impacts of crop management to productivity, soil health, and water quality. We are seeking interns with skills in programming and data analysis (e.g. knowledge about building or applying statistical models and remote sensing image processing). Working virtually is encouraged.

Position 3 Description: The student intern will work with DAWN’s project management and extension teams in refining DAWN’s web presence and social media strategy to better communicate its message to stakeholders. Additionally, interns will assist the project management team in organizing project-wide workshops and compiling reporting documents.
