Westat, a privately-owned social science research firm in Rockville, MD, is seeking individuals who are interested in gaining experience in and learning about social science research as applied in the “real world.” The internship is for individuals who will have a Bachelor’s degree conferred by June 1, 2015, and who are already in a master’s or doctoral degree program or who plan to attend graduate school. This internship is intended for individuals studying disciplines in the social sciences including but not limited to: child welfare, criminal justice, education, human factors, psychology, public health, behavioral health (substance abuse prevention and treatment, and mental health), and transportation.
Responsibilities:
Successful candidates will work with existing project teams and participate in tasks such as conducting focus groups, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, writing findings, planning steps in a research project, conducting interviews, and other project-related activities. Each intern will also have a professional level staff member serve as his or her mentor to oversee the experience. Another component of the internship program is participation in a weekly seminar series that describes Westat’s research areas, projects, and allows for discussion of topics related to the fundamentals of working in a research environment. Participants will gain valuable knowledge regarding contracts, grants, and research ethics. Additionally, these sessions are a way for mentors and interns to meet to discuss their program experiences, examine various issues that have arisen, and discuss their professional development.
