Support Services Counselor
The Arc of Montgomery County
The Arc of Montgomery County’s Family & Community Services department has a FULL-TIME opening for a Support Services Counselor to work in a family home in Brookeville. The salary is $11.61-$12.21 per hour, depending one experience. The ideal candidate should be available Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm. Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the staff will be working closely with the family of a program participant with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Monitor medical needs of individual and carry out specific instructions of family to implement proper grooming, bathing, personal hygiene techniques
Provide assistance with lifting and transferring participant, including from wheelchair to bed, bed to bathroom, etc. and ensuring participant’s safety
Engage the participation of program participant in stimulating activities, including utilizing iPad and other communication devises to facilitate reading comprehension, watching videos, and other physical activities as needed
Work as a team with parent and special educator to implement programs and meaningful, engaging activities for participant
Facilitate participant in community integration activities outside the home
Help out with light household duties as needed
Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge:
At least one year’s experience in the Human Services Field, preferably prior experience in nursing, special education, and/or as a residential counselor. Previous work with individuals with developmental disabilities required.
Ability to withstand physical demands, including frequent standing, stooping, sitting, lifting and transferring. Must be able to lift 75 Ibs at least.
Excellent communication skills, with ability to listen, follow directions, and resolve conflicts in a constructive manner
Must be able to complete state-required trainings, including CPR and First Aid, and be able to successfully pass TB test, drug screening, and background check
Creativity, energy, and enthusiasm. Active engagement with participant required.
Willingness to work alongside cats and dogs required, as family houses pets
Access to a reliable vehicle with no more than one point on driving record
Reliability and dependability a MUST
