Honor UMD Veterans on Friday, November 9 in Memorial Chapel!

The Veterans Day Celebration at the Chapel, capping a full week of Veteran activities, will be memorable. Three Veterans who are part of the University family will share their stories: Valarie R. Austin, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point currently receiving her second Bachelor of Science degree; Robert Mueck, Captain with the University of Maryland Police and Training Director of the UMD Police Academy; and David Boucher, a Pat Tillman Military Scholar alumnus now working in private industry.

The program, open to all, will take place on Friday, November 9 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.and will conclude with a festive lunch in the Memorial Chapel Garden. Thanks to a generous donor, your presence will help to build the Veterans scholarship fund.

Research in the lab mainly focuses on the involvement of prefrontal cortical circuits in semantic memory and purposeful behavior, through a combination of behavioral, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and neuropsychological methods. CASL Listening Research Study 

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is seeking participants who speak English as a native language for a language research study that will take place over several months.

Participants would be asked to participate in a research session (2 hours) where you will complete a listening comprehension test and a memory test.

Participants will receive $95 for their time.

Qualified participants must be highly proficient in American English and must have learned it as their first language and must be 18 to 19 years old.

Native Mandarin Chinese speakers needed for paid language study!

Mandarin Chinese Study

Researchers from the University of Maryland are looking for native speakers of Mandarin Chinese for a paid language study. The study involves making judgments about the pronunciation of a set of Mandarin words produced by English speakers. Participants may also be asked to provide background information about themselves.

Payment is $10/hour for a 45-60 minute session. The experiment will take place at the Maryland Neuroimaging Center (MNC)<http://www.mnc.umd.edu/aboutus/directions> right next to campus. All interested individuals will be asked about their language background before participation. Not all native Mandarin speakers may be eligible.

The Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project is looking to hire 2 research assistants (RA) who are recent or upcoming college graduates with a psychology or neuroscience major and an interest in going to graduate or medical school.



Project Description:
In the Rhode Island Hospital outpatient psychiatry practice has integrated research assessments into clinical practice. The MIDAS project is one of the largest clinical epidemiological studies using semi-structured diagnostic interviews ever conducted, and has published more than 200 papers from our database (see MIDASproject.org for a list).

Responsibilities:
The RAs will be trained in conducting diagnostic interviews and writing clinical reports. The RAs will also be responsible for coordinating data and data entry. Opportunities are available (and encouraged) for presenting research at national meetings and writing manuscripts for publication. Prior research assistants have had a 100% success rate at getting into graduate and medical school.

Lab Coordinator position in the Memory at Emory Lab !

Description:
The Memory at Emory Laboratory headed by Patricia Bauer, Department of Psychology, Emory University, is accepting applications for a full-time laboratory coordinator beginning immediately. The lab conducts research on a variety of aspects of memory from a developmental perspective, using behavior, eye tracking, and event-related potentials (ERPs). On-going studies focus on autobiographical or personal memory, the roles of time and space in episodic memory, relations between emotion and memory, and extension of semantic knowledge through integration across episodes and contexts. Responsibilities:
Lab coordinator duties include a variety of administrative and research-related tasks, such as (1) training and overseeing undergraduate research assistants; (2) conducting behavioral, electrophysiological, and eye tracking experiments with children and adults (i.e., recruiting, scheduling, and data collection); (3) reducing, managing, and analyzing behavioral and electrophysiological data; (4) creating experimental stimuli; (5) conducting library searches and literature reviews to assist in manuscript and grant preparation; and (6) performing general administrative duties, including maintenance of the lab webpage and purchasing of lab and office supplies.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or related field is required as well as previous research experience using behavioral, and/or electrophysiological methods.

Preferred qualifications include, but are not limited to experience managing research projects; previous experience working with children; the ability to work independently; keen attention to detail; and the ability to interact warmly and professionally with parents and children. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential. Computer skills should include knowledge of Word, Excel, SPSS or SAS software, and SurveyMonkey.

This type of position is ideal for highly motivated individuals wishing to gain intensive research experience prior to applying to PhD programs.

Minimum 2 year commitment. The position is full-time and provides a full benefits package. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The DC Chapter of the Association of Black Psychologists will host a Careers in Psychology Roundtable on Saturday October 27 from 5p-7p at Trinity University. Trinity University is located at 125 Michigan Ave. NE Washington, DC. The event will be held in Social Hall, which is in the Main Building. 


Panelists include: Dr. Adanna Johnson; Dr. Edwin Nichols; Dr. Frederick B. Phillips; Dr. Daryl Thorne; Ms. Nkemka Anyiwo

This will be an opportunity for professionals and graduate students to talk with undergraduate and graduate students about career paths in psychology. Professionals from different fields will be prepared to share their expertise and development in their respective field.

Panelists will be asked to: 1) explain their field of work; 2) describe your current work; 3) describe how your work can be applied to helping people of African ancestry. Depending on the number of panelists, each panelist will have 5-7 minutes to speak during the panel and then be asked to join the round tables for questions and answers with the students and professionals afterwards.

After the panel, there will be 45 minute round tables where graduate students and professionals will be asked to share their experiences with undergraduate students on the following topics:
1) how to prepare for a career in psychology 2) the ins and outs of applying to your respective institution; 3) how to obtain funding for graduate school, externships and internships; and 4) how to secure a job as a professional.

Project Description:
How collective perceptions develop and influence team behaviors, influence among members, and performance. Studies in the lab span those on formal and informal leadership in virtual teams, to those focused on diversity of member differences (e.g., gender, age, or status) on team influence processes, performance, and innovation.

Responsibilities:
Searching, reviewing, and analyzing existing literature
Analyzing interview themes / qualitative data coding
Managing and processing quantitative data (e.g., surveys)
Supporting survey design, development, and (online) administration
Running of lab experiments

Qualifications:
Undergraduate psychology or management major who is interested in pursuing a graduate degree in social and/or organizational research and interested in gaining experience in the research process. 

Preferred knowledge and skills:
Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Volunteers needed in Child Development Lab!


The Child Development Lab, under the direction of Dr. Nathan Fox, is currently investigating the development of the Mirror Neuron System in the first year of life. To do this, we collect video and EEG data from both infants and adults while producing simple motor acts, and while observing these actions performed by others.

We are seeking highly motivated, upper-level students to volunteer this semester (Fall 2012) to help with running our infant visits at the lab and with detail-oriented coding of behavioral data. Requirements: min 3.0 GPA, 9 hrs/week, 2 semester commitment. Prereq: PSYC 200. Must have availability this semester on Wednesday mornings and some afternoons (after 2pm). Part-time Lab Coordinator position at George Washington University!

The Neuroscience of Language Lab at George Washington University is accepting applications for a part-time lab coordinator beginning January 2013. We investigate the neural basis of language using a variety of techniques, including fMRI studies with healthy adults, behavioral studies with children, and studies of language breakdown after brain damage.

The lab coordinator’s administrative duties will include managing subject recruitment, maintaining IRB protocols, helping with grant applications, and training research assistants. In addition, the position will offer opportunities for deep engagement with the lab’s scientific goals, including participation in experimental design, stimulus creation, data collection and analysis.

The ideal applicant will have exceptional organization skills, good communication and interpersonal skills, and intellectual curiosity about cognition and the brain. This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field. Additionally preferred qualifications include experience working with children and/or patients, prior research experience in a lab, and knowledge of data analysis procedures and software. Individuals who are interested in pursuing a research career are especially encouraged to apply.

The Laboratory for Crustacean Neurobiology Behavior (http://www.bsos.umd.edu/psyc/Herberholz/Research.html) is looking for a motivated undergraduate student to work in the lab for 6-8 hours per week. The student will assist on various research projects, perform animal maintenance, as well as other routine lab duties such as cleaning and organizing lab supplies, managing and picking up orders, etc. This is an unpaid position providing an opportunity to gain experience in a scientific laboratory setting. Testing Technicians will administer a written psychological test to DC police and firefighter applicants once a week on Tuesdays at 8 am and occasional Saturdays. This job requires setting up interviews, scanning and grading the tests, working directly with a psychologist, doing general administrative work, and occasional paid take home work when available if desired.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be available all Tuesdays from 7:30am to approximately 3:30 pm, NEVER later than 8:00am when the testing starts. Students working on psychology or criminal justice degrees a plus. Must have own transportation to DC (location is too far from the metro). Great public speaking and communication skills. Committed to the job at least through May, 2013.
