NextGen Psych Scholars Program. Application deadline is 5/23!

NextGen Psych Scholars Program is opening recruitment for 2024-2025 from now until May 23rd @ Midnight CST!

The goal of the NextGen Psych Scholars Program (NPSP) is to cultivate long-term support structures between diverse undergrad or post-baccalaureate mentees and current graduate students and post-docs to 1)embrace and celebrate the unique journeys that have led current graduate students to pursue a PhD and 2) to inspire and empower the next generation of scholars while enhancing feelings of belongingness in academia. In addition to outlining the process of applying to graduate school, a significant amount of time will be spent discussing how to both challenge and navigate the “hidden curriculum” (e.g. networking, advocating for yourself) of academia.

Over the course of a year, the program will consist of a series of virtual panels and workshops such as:

Individual journeys, highlighting both the challenges and successes that led graduate students to pursue a PhD

Considerations when choosing a program:

The admissions process and application tips (led by faculty)
Navigating the hidden curriculum
Fellowships and post-baccalaureate opportunities
Professional development including R programming basics

Mentees are paired with current graduate students and post-docs to discuss their graduate school plans and workshop application materials. Prospective students at all stages of the process, from contemplation to application, are invited.

How To Apply:
If you are interested in joining for 2025-2026, please fill out our application at https://z.umn.edu/NPSP24-25 by 5/23 at midnight. All are welcome to apply, but priority admittance to the program will go toward students from underrepresented groups. Please note that this program is focused specifically on psychology PhD programs; if you are interested in mentorship for other types of programs (e.g. MA or PsyD) this program will likely not meet your needs.

Notifications for acceptance into the program will go out by 07/01/2025.

For additional information, please see our website (nextgenpsychscholars.com) and follow us on Twitter (@NextGenPsych) for updates and announcements.

Rainbow Room Focus Group Interest Check

https://forms.gle/tBfsvoo8fvxWKgLaA

Rainbow Room was a space first introduced in 2017 by the Department of Psychology that aimed to provide a place where LGBTQIA+ undergraduate student and allies could come together to "build community, de-stress, and have a good time."  Rainbow Room was a largely unstructured group that afforded students the opportunity to collaboratively decide on how they wanted to spend the time; some days were spent discussing identity, while others were spent simply enjoying snacks and light conversation together. We believe that regardless of the day’s topic, there is power in just showing up and occupying a physical space alongside others who share and appreciate your identities.

We are excited to share that Rainbow Room will be making a return to the Department of Psychology during the Spring 2025 semester, and we'd like YOUR voice to be represented in the revival of this space. Our team (Jose Lima Rosas, Brittany Carpenter, and Nel Odike) is putting together a focus group to help inform how this space can best fit your needs and what you would like to see out of it.

Next steps:

1) If you are interested in joining the focus group, please fill out the interest check: https://forms.gle/tBfsvoo8fvxWKgLaA

2) Jose, Brittany, or Nel will reach out over Terpmail to collect your availability

3) A 30 to 45-minute interest group will be scheduled over Zoom a few weeks from now

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to any of the folks listed below. Thank you!
