the Child Development Lab!The Child Development Lab at the University of Maryland is seeking motivated Undergraduate Research Assistants to join our team. Research Assistants will contribute to the Mother-Child Dynamics Study, which investigates how parent-child emotional and attention patterns (measured via mobile eye-tracking glasses) during live social interactions recorded in the lab, play a role in children’s social learning and emotional outcomes. This position involves conducting behavioral coding (e.g., observing and rating parent-child emotions and behaviors) from videos recorded during lab visits. Additional responsibilities may involve pre-processing video files and learning to run Python scripts on eye-tracking data. The position requires a strong desire to learn new research skills, attention to detail during meticulous research tasks, effective time management, and good interpersonal skills.
This position is ideal for students interested in gaining research experience in child development and psychology, especially those considering graduate programs in related fields.
Credits/supervision: This work will be mainly supervised by Dr. Selin Zeytinoglu. We ask for a two-semester commitment, though space is limited. Credit is available for PSYC 479, BSCI 399, EDHD 498, & PHSC 389 as well as work-study for eligible students.
Responsibilities:
-Commit a minimum of 6 hours per week in lab
-Conduct behavioral coding of parents’ and children’s responses to emotional tasks
-Preprocess video & eye-tracking data
-Participate in research discussions
-Opportunities to present research at university-based or national conferences, depending on the student’s motivation and interest
Desired qualifications:
Interest in research focused on emotions, socioemotional development, and parent-child interactions
Strong attention to detail, proper time management, and good interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with or interest in learning Python for running machine-learning-based scripts to process video data
