Psychology Major Shereen Ashai has been named an Undergraduate Researcher of the Year for 2019 by the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research.
This award is given annually to just five undergraduate researchers whose work has represented an outstanding and exceptional contribution to their academic field of study. Under the mentorship of Dr. Karen O'Brien, Shereen explored loss experiences among college students in Kashmir. Impressively, she collected data from over 200 college students in Kashmir. The title of her thesis is Coping with Loss: Advancing Understanding of posttraumatic growth and grief in Kashmiri College Students . She found that the losses experienced by Kashmiri college students and engagement in meaning-focused coping predicted
both complicated grief and post-traumatic growth. Shereen’s work will inform the development of interventions to reduce negative outcomes in Kashmiri youth. Congratulations Shereen!
