Spring 2015 Internship with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Montgomery County!

Spring 2015 Intern
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Montgomery County

NAMI MC offers a friendly working environment that prepares you for working in the health field. One of the internship tasks is to answer the helpline. People call looking for referrals for other mental health resources (like therapists), to see what programs NAMI MC offers, because they are in a crisis situation, or just to talk. There are also assignments to complete that will show you how mental illness and NAMI MC impact the community. Some of these assignments include writing a book review for the newsletter, interviewing staff, helping program coordinators, and attending health or community fairs.

As any kind of health major, being able to present health information is crucial. Being a vendor at a health fair is an excellent experience that this internship offers. In addition to these jobs, there are also routine office tasks like filing, data entry, keeping the brochures and library clean, etc. Fundraising is another part of the job. There is a main fundraising event each semester, and then there are smaller fundraising activities that may come up.

An internship with NAMI MC means developing better skills in outreach, writing, giving presentations, professionalism, and organization. It also helps you be more resourceful and develop empathy.
