Genetics Research Trainee
National Institutes of Health, ClinSeq Project
Description:
The ClinSeq® project is a cutting edge study being conducted at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to pilot the use of a new type of genetic testing called whole exome sequencing. Through our piloting, we hope to learn more about the informatics, laboratory, medical and genetic counseling challenges associated with such large-scale genetic testing. Each spring, we hire one person through the Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) program to join our team. This person gains a wealth of clinical and research experience over the course of a 1- or 2-year appointment, as well as the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clinical and research professionals, such as nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, geneticists and molecular biologists.
Responsibilities:
Recruiting, verbally consenting and scheduling new participants in the program
Summarizing the results of clinical testing completed at each participant’s enrollment visit (including blood work, EKG, echocardiogram and CT scan) into a clinical letter under the supervision of our nurse practitioner
Maintaining electronic and paper records of study participation and data collection
Assisting social and behavioral researchers with various aspects of study design and implementation including: literature reviews, participant recruitment, and data collection
Participating in weekly group meetings and conferences
Assisting with the publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals
Carrying out other administrative tasks related to the study as requested by study staff
Qualifications:
Must have received their bachelor’s degree less than two years prior to the date they begin the program
Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
Must intend to apply to graduate or professional school during their time in the program
Ideally has an interest in pursuing a career in genetics, such as becoming a genetic counselor or geneticist, or in the social sciences.
How To Apply:
Please e-mail a cover letter and CV to Katie Lewis at lewiskatie@mail.nih.gov by January 15, 2014. For more information on the IRTA program at the NIH, such as benefits and requirements, please visit: https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/postbac_irta.
