Description:
This program is offered through the University of Iowa. It is a unique three-week study program (8 different courses at 8+ different sites) during this winter. The states (or union territories) covered include Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. The program utilizes the best of cultural immersion, tourism, service orientation, academic, and research concepts to enable participants learn directly from and interact with leading social entrepreneurs, health care providers, academic institutions, and non-profits that excel in the service they provide within the cultural, socio-economic, and geographical diversity that is India. It is called INDIA Winterim.

The leading Indian collaborators who work the University, employ a variety of approaches to address social and environmental problems such as poverty, access to health care, rural development, and conservation. The diverse group of students and participants from health care professions, social work, nursing, public health, engineering, business, conservation and a myriad of other fields observe, learn, and collaborate with these groups to develop new perspectives on pressing global challenges and methods being used to address them.

The University of Iowa’s Winterim Program in India, over the last seven years, has been generously supported by student scholarships and program funds by the Sehgal Family Foundation of Des Moines, Iowa and the Foundation’s Initiative in Gurgaon, India called “The Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD).”

Program Cost:
The winter 2013-14 program fee for University of Maryland students is $3,500-3,600, depending on the course chosen. The program fee includes tuition; orientation meetings; double-occupancy lodging in India; all program-related transportation in India, including baggage handling, and program-related airport, train terminal and bus station pick-ups and drop-offs, translators and field guides, excursions and cultural programs, and conference registration, luncheons, and banquets. Round trip airfare is not included in the program fee. A cost sheet outlining all the anticipated expenses will be made available on the web site. The program fee for students attending other U.S. universities and for any other interested individuals will be $200 more than the cost to University of Iowa students.
