New "LING 449E Biology of Language" course!

LING 449E
Biology of Language Course
Fall 2015

TTH 2:00 pm-3:15 pm
Instructor: Chris Heffner

What defines human language? Are other animals capable of using language in the same ways that humans can? These questions and more will be discussed in the interdisciplinary seminar “Biology of Language” (LING 449E), which will be held from 2pm-3:15pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Marie Mount Hall. This will be a small interdisciplinary seminar, bringing together insights both from linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and animal behavior. The course is intended to bring together students from many different fields, so no specific background is required. Instead, interested students should be willing to go outside their comfort zone and learn about topics they might not have heard much about, topics like the definition of language, animal studies of human language learning, mirror neurons and theories of speech perception, and category learning are all potential topics. There will be opportunities to try out experimental design and construction.

PSYC Major Lindsey Benjamin Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Grant!

A huge congratulations to senior PSYC major, Lindsey Benjamin, who was just informed that she
received a Fulbright grant to teach at a secondary school in Madrid, Spain next year. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the nation's largest study abroad fellowship program, and is designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates opportunities for international experience, personal enrichment and an open exchange of ideas with citizens of other nations. There are two main types of Fulbright grants: one for academic study abroad and one for teaching abroad. It is quite rare for an undergraduate
student to be awarded a Fulbright grant, and it is a very competitive application process. Lindsey started preparing her application package during the end of her junior year, and went through several rounds of interviews.

Lindsey has a near-perfect G.P.A. and will receive her Bachelor of Science in May, 2015, with a minor in Spanish Language and Culture. Lindsey studied abroad in Seville, Spain during the Spring 2014 semester. She has amassed an impressive amount of teaching experiences at such a young age. Lindsey has worked for several summers as a Teaching Fellow with Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia, an organization which focuses on improving teaching in urban environments. Lindsey even created a psychology club for the students at the middle school! Lindsey also tutors and mentors students in Washington, D.C., and has served as a tutor for student athletes at University of Maryland. This past year, Lindsey was awarded membership in the Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars program, which honors Maryland’s most successful seniors. Outside of classes in her final semester, Lindsey currently works as a Junior Associate in the Division of Bilingual Education with the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS).

On her Fulbright appointment in Spain next year, Lindsey tells us that her central responsibility will be to lead and prepare the students for the Global Classrooms: Model United Nations Program. This is an innovative, international program that provides middle and high school students the opportunity to step into the shoes of U.N. ambassadors and attempt to tackle complex global problems through simulations, discussions, debates, and other activities. In addition to leading her particular school in the Model U.N. program, she will also be responsible for assisting the permanent teaching staff with different classes throughout the school day. She will help with English Language courses as well as with various other subject matters, including History, Geography, Science, and Physical Education.

Way to go, Lindsey! We are so proud of you!

More information about applying to the Fulbright program, as well as other scholarship opportunities, can be found at: www.scholarships.umd.edu

Apply to the Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program! Deadline is March 9th!

Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program (Undergraduates - Deadline: March 9, 2015 – ONE WEEK AWAY)

The prestigious Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program honors the legacy of Howard Peters “Pete” Rawlings and the work he did as a Maryland delegate. Participants in the Fellows program are provided multiple opportunities--both academic and experiential--to grow as ethical leaders and become champions for those whose voices may otherwise go unheard in the leadership and decision-making process. Maintaining a commitment to those historically underrepresented in leadership positions is central to the program. This one-year program invites highly-motivated undergraduate students to engage in leadership development, advocacy for their passions, and create social change.

All majors are invited to apply to the Rawlings Program, and applications are available on the website below:
