Description:
The child life specialists of Children’s National Medical are currently seeking volunteers to help support patients and families. We are looking for special category volunteers to work in three sectors of our hospital: inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department.

We are seeking outgoing, hardworking, resourceful and independent personalities who are looking for meaningful volunteer experience and are dedicated to making a difference in the community.

This volunteer opportunity would be beneficial for all students seeking experience with children and families. It would also be ideal for those interested in hospital settings; such as Child Life, nursing, early childhood education, social work and those interested in public health.

Roles and Responsibilities
Inpatient
· Volunteers will be providing support to patients and families both at bedside and in our playrooms and may be placed on a variety of units.

Outpatient
· Volunteers would be providing support in the waiting rooms of our surgery center and radiology areas. Outpatient will be one on one or group settings

Emergency Department
· Volunteers would be providing activities for patients and families while in our waiting room and provide support for other emergency department initiatives focusing on patient satisfaction.

Volunteer Schedule and Shifts
· Volunteers will be working with children and families in the hospital environment with supervision under Certified Child Life Specialists

o One on one or group settings

· Volunteers must dedicate themselves to a minimum of one 3 hour shift per week for a minimum of 72 hours.

o Outpatient areas from 7:30 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

o Inpatient shifts from 9:30 am-5 pm Monday through Friday.

o Emergency Department shifts are 7 days a week from 3pm-9pm.

· This program runs year round and can be suited to meet the needs of both the volunteer and the hospital. The application process can take one to two months to complete.

Paid research participants needed for CASL Auditory Training Study!

CASL (Center for Advanced Study of Language) 
Auditory Training Study

Responsibilities:
Participate in 12 1.5-2 Hour Sessions of questionnaires and computerized tasks at the UMD Center for Advanced Study of Language (near CP Metro). All sessions must be completed within five weeks.

Compensation:
Participants receive a total of $165 for completion of the entire study. Payments will be made at the rate of $5 per session with a $105 bonus at the end of the last session. In addition, completed participants will be entered into a raffle for one of three $150 gift cards after Session 12.

Qualifications:
-18-30 years of age

-Native English Speaker
-Normal hearing
-Normal or corrective vision
-Cannot posses a documented  speech/language disorder or learning disability

Prevention and Early Adversity Research Lab (PEARL)

Description:
The Prevention & Early Adversity Research Lab (PEARL) is seeking undergraduate research assistants for the fall and spring semesters. The lab is currently conducting a study on at-risk pregnant women and their infants. The goal of the study is to understand how risk factors, such as prenatal depression, impact pregnant women and their infants. PEARL Research Assistants will participate in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing graduate work in psychology, human development, intervention science, family science, community health, or related fields. Students will get exposure to research issues pertaining to the prenatal period, infancy, mothers, environmental risk, and African American families.

The MPCRL provides high-quality counseling and psychotherapy to adults in the Prince George's County, Montgomery County, and Washington, D.C. area. treatment focuses on insight and understanding difficulties in relationship problems, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and meaning of life. Synergy ’13 is a coordinated effort – bringing together two campuses, Cedar Crest College and Lehigh Carbon Community College to to plan, coordinate and evaluate a national psychology conference for students at 2-year and 4-year institutions. In addition, this year there will be a limited number of registrations available for high school students interested in psychology.

Representatives from over 20 different colleges and universities will present a diverse schedule of sessions. This year there is also an opportunity for students to present their research.

Earn Badges in Leadership or Career Tracks
Students can choose from multiple sessions and are eligible to earn badges that indicate their participation in leadership or career tracks.

Present Your Research
Students who have completed research are welcome to submit a proposal to present their research in a 20 minute presentation.
Two students will be scheduled to present their research, followed by a 5 minute question and answer period. Interested in

Description:

The Language Development and Parenting Lab is directed by Dr. Meredith Rowe, within the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) in the College of Education. The lab studies language acquisition in infants and young children. Specifically, the lab is interested in how children learn language through social interactions with their parents, and how different cultural and linguistic backgrounds influence early language development.

Responsibilities:
-Code DVDs of parent-child interactions
-Transcription
-Data Entry
-Scheduling participants for studies
-Working with study participants

Qualifications:
-Preference will be given to applicants who are able to work for two semesters. The position entails 8 hours per week, including a one hour weekly team lab meeting. RAs are compensated with class credit for one course per semester.

Description:

Take photographs of individuals of the day programs as they participate in the Transformation Project community activities. Behavioral Neurobiology Laboratory - 4 credits

Prerequisite: PSYC300 and PSYC301. Restriction: Must be in Psychology program; and must have earned a minimum of 85 credits.

Laboratory exercises introducing concepts and techniques of behavioral neurobiology. Activities emphasize design of neurobiology experiments, hands-on experience with behavioral and neurobiological techniques, data collection, and analysis of the results. Most exercises use living animals.

Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research
Cognition and Emotion Relationship Study

Description:
Do you get angry or frustrated easily? Do your emotions feel intense or out of control? Do you say/do things when upset that you wouldn’t do otherwise? If you answered YES to these questions you may be eligible to participate in a research study at the Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research at the University of Maryland. This study examines the relationship between cognition and emotion. Participation requires three (3) visits at our center. The visits will consist of a psychological evaluation (at no cost to yourself), questionnaires, and participation in several computer games. You also will be asked to speak about a stressful event.

The First session will take approximately 2 hours, and you will earn $20. The Second and Third sessions will take 30-45 minutes at most, and you will earn between $12 and $25 depending on your performance on a computer task.

Qualifications:
-Must be between the ages of 18 and 45
