The Motivated Cognition and Aging Lab (PI: Samanez-Larkin) at Yale University is seeking 1-2 post-bacc research assistants / project coordinators to begin in August 2013.


Responsibilities:

Description:
Research in the lab is focused on characterizing age differences and individual differences across adulthood in the motivational and cognitive processes that support decision making.
The work in the lab combines several disciplines including psychology, behavioral
economics/finance, neuroscience, and public health. A wide variety
of methods are utilized including behavioral studies, experience sampling in everyday
life, structural and functional MRI, and radioligand PET imaging.


Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic about a science or medical career,
self-motivated, independent, creative, and have interests in decision
neuroscience and/or life-span development and aging. Individuals with
programming (Python preferred) and optimization experience will be given

Part-Time Position for Post-Bach PSYC Terp

The Department of Psychology and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences are thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a 2013 Moving Maryland Forward Grant.  The goal is to produce a series of online video modules that provide current and prospective minority students with virtual mentoring on success at the undergraduate level. Some modules will focus specifically on psychology while others on more general aspects of academics, professional development and preparation for graduate study.

The grant creates a part-time Project Manager position ("Academic Program Specialist, Contingent I, 20 hours per week) to start mid- to late-June of 2013 with the possibility of continuing through May of 2014.  The Project Manager will be responsible for:
  • Conducting literature reviews and summaries of research related to academic achievement disparities and interventions
  • Conducting focus group sessions with current and prospective students on this and other campuses
  • Developing and producing short video modules that address specific aspects of academic success at the undergraduate level.  These would include interviews with a diverse range of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
  • A bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland (the work requires an intimate knowledge of this particular University)
  • A record of significant academic achievement in psychology
  • A record of involvement in independent study (e.g., internships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships)
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Experience producing multimedia content (e.g., videos, online presentations, course content)
  • Experience designing and conducting survey and experimental research
  • A demonstrated interest in supporting student learning and success (e.g., peer mentor, teaching assistant, student affairs).

Queer Citizenship

Course Description:
Students will examine the processes and practices of citizenship in everyday life with a specific focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) cultures and identities. Beginning with Thomas Marshall’s concept of citizenship, students explore the history of citizenship in the U.S. with a “queer” lens and identify how exclusion and inclusion operate within citizenship formations of “minority” groups. They investigate mobilizations and political and cultural affiliations of LGBTQ communities to understand the changing historical and material contexts of citizenship that produce new forms of identity and new forms of belonging.

Course Objectives:
Understanding how marginalized or “minority” LGBTQ groups resist, negotiate, and/or incorporate issues of citizenship in their everyday lives primarily through various artistic expressions;
Reframing citizenship to highlight the cultural aspects of identity that have been excluded from legal discourse to underscore the expressive, communal, and artistic frames that create different forms of membership illustrating LGBTQ self-making and self-determination;
Examining how LGBTQ cultures, sexualities, and identities have changed, disrupted, or modified early conventions of citizenship and theorize the potentials for a 21st-Century "queer" citizenship.

The late-nineteenth century was a dramatic time filled with rapid changes in politics, science, and social theory, and the art world dealt with all of it. How did artists respond to these changes? Can art drive these changes?

The Impressionist, Neo-Impressionist, and Symbolist artists were avid readers of psychological theories and often struggled to incorporate them within their work. New theories advanced in the 1880s by Charcot, the so-called father of modern neurology, created a stir of interest in the self and the mind, which impacted artists in diverse ways.

Description:
The Annual Report Online provides data on the functioning of all accredited programs. These data are reviewed each year by the Commission on Accreditation and are used to provide the public with information as to the overall functioning of accredited programs.

The primary task of the incumbent is to collect and enter data, using the appropriate coding schemes, related to the various research projects in the office and to monitor data quality during the data entry period of the Annual Report Online.

The individual will be involved in the overall design and implementation of accreditation surveys and research projects with the research manager, associate director and the AED/director.
The individual will follow-up in the entry and analysis of data.

Responsibilities:
Acts as primary resource and point of contact for accredited programs seeking assistance in completing Annual Report Online.
Enters and transfers data, following established schemes, using statistical and database software packages such as SPSS and MS Excel.
Assists Accreditation Research Manager with conducting ongoing research projects through the collection of data from accredited programs as appropriate for analysis and review by the CoA.
Assists with conducting analyses and generating reports and presentations for the Commission on Accreditation.
Works with 3rd party vendor(s) to maintain and improve the database that holds all data collected from accredited programs.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in psychology or related area in social sciences with some experience in the analysis of data.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and SPSS.
